Breezy Beach Cottage Update Blends Old Charm with New Highlights

Renovated Beach Cottage in Rehoboth, DE

Our clients’ 1950s-era ranch home had great bones but needed a coastal cottage refresh, along with some extra square footage. They presented our team with a wishlist that included a larger first floor and brand new second story; keeping the existing vaulted ceiling, brick fireplace, and pecky cypress paneling in the great room; giving the exterior a breezy, coastal feel. With their inherent eye for design, we had a wonderful time working with these homeowners to create the perfect home that fit their vision.

UNIQUE CHALLENGES

Every home transformation project comes with its own set of challenges. Although our in-house engineering team had found a way to support the weight of this house’s addition atop the existing basement, and our designers had managed to create a plan that worked within the parameters of the local building codes, the COVID-19 shutdown was one curveball we hadn’t expected. Our crew had to stop working on the project three-quarters of the way through until we could come up with a plan for social distancing and a solution to the supply chain issues the industry was facing at the time. While it was difficult to halt progress so close to completion, we found a way to get back to work as soon as we could.

A KITCHEN WORTH WAITING FOR

Luxury Custom Home Rehoboth Beach

The Pandemic may have slowed things down, but our clients’ new kitchen was well worth the wait. Against a crisp white-and-wood backdrop, an absolutely gorgeous La Cornue French range in a robins-egg blue takes center stage. Paired with gold accents, lighted China cabinets, open shelving, and intimate island seating, this splurge of an appliance is the finishing touch on a cozy coastal space.

A BATHROOM WITH A COASTAL FEEL

This breezy powder room features white shiplap walls and a beautifully made marble vanity with open shelving underneath. A simple pendant light and nautical mirror add just the right amount of beachy vibes.

ADDING WARMTH WITH WOOD

Rehoboth Beach Renovation with Pecky Cypress Paneling

Our clients loved the pecky cypress paneling that lined the original walls of their great room and wanted to find a way to keep it in their home’s new design. We completely agreed with their vision, and painstakingly removed the wood to whitewash it before reinstalling. Paired with the shiplap and exposed beams that crisscross the room’s ceiling, this rustic treatment was the perfect way to add to the space’s cottage feel.

Rehoboth Beach Cottage Renovation

To add even more warmth and whimsy to the home, we installed light hardwood flooring in a herringbone pattern in the main entryway.

Finally, we modified and updated the existing wood-burning fireplace into a more convenient gas one—but to maintain the ambiance our clients loved so much, we made sure to add some birch gas logs that are just as good as the real thing.

We couldn’t be happier with the way this home transformation turned out, and neither can the homeowners who are now ready to live that coastal life.
